Model profile

Model history and generations

Model history and generations

The first generation (L320, 2005–2013) was based on the Discovery 3 and is the classic, more truck-like Sport. The second generation (L494, 2013–2022) moved to Land Rover's aluminium-intensive architecture, shed significant weight and is the sweet spot for most imports. The current third generation (L461, from 2022) rides on the MLA-Flex platform with mild-hybrid straight-sixes and a BMW-sourced V8.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Engines and drivetrain

US-market Sports centre on petrol power. The L494 offered a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 (~340–380 hp), a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 (~518 hp) and the SVR with the same V8 tuned to 550–575 hp. Later L494 cars introduced the 3.0-litre Ingenium inline-six with mild-hybrid assist.

Which trim makes sense

The Sport is a five-door SUV, offered as a five-seater and, on some engines, with a 5+2 third row. US trims include SE, HSE, HSE Dynamic, Autobiography and the performance SVR. Autobiography and HSE Dynamic cars bring the adaptive dampers, upgraded leather, Meridian audio and the larger wheels.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

Supply on the US market

Supply is strong and varied. Because the Sport sold heavily in coastal and sunbelt states, you can find rust-free, high-specification cars with complete dealer history.

Who benefits from importing

The Sport suits a buyer who wants a fast, luxurious, genuinely capable SUV and is willing to maintain it properly.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Known weak points and maintenance

The Range Rover Sport is superb to drive but demands realistic maintenance expectations. The air suspension compressor and airbags are the classic wear item — check that the car sits level, raises and lowers cleanly, and holds height overnight. Electrical and infotainment faults appear across the range, so test every module.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

US and EU spec compared

US Sports run SAE headlights, typically lack a rear fog lamp and read speed in mph. Infotainment defaults to US maps and imperial units.

TÜV, modifications and registration

Typical approval work is adding or converting a rear fog lamp, ensuring a compliant headlight beam pattern, and documenting the odometer.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is the Range Rover Sport reliable to import?

It is capable and desirable but maintenance-intensive. Buy on full service history and inspect the air suspension and V8 timing items closely.

Which engine should I import?

The 5.0 supercharged V8 for character, the 3.0 supercharged V6 for lower running cost, or the SVR if you want the halo model.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

How is import VAT treated when importing a Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

Import VAT and other taxes or costs are assessed separately under the applicable rules and the circumstances of the individual case. A blanket answer for every vehicle would not be reliable.

Are US Range Rover Sports better equipped?

Often yes; the American market favours high-spec V8 and Autobiography cars that were pricey options in Germany.

What about the air suspension?

It is the key wear item. A car that raises, lowers and holds height cleanly is essential; budget for eventual compressor or airbag service.

Will it pass TÜV?

Generally yes, after lighting adjustments, via individual approval, because the car is UK-built and close to European spec.

Can I import the SVR?

Yes. The supercharged V8 SVR is well-represented on the US market; verify service history and any modifications for approval.
